Surely ‘showing active disregard for UK values’ is an integral part of being British? Insulting the government, the opposition, the royal family, the BBC, the local council, the British legal system, British celebrities etc. seems to form the basis of most articles in national newspapers.

I’ve worked here for 10 years. Every time I think I should finally get round to applying for UK citizenship, they announce something like this. I can’t even muster the indignation anymore. I just start looking for jobs back home.

But get this: to get back home, I’d need to renew my (foreign) passport. And if I want UKBA to transfer my existing British visa into that new (foreign) passport — the property and legal instrument of a sovereign state — *I now have to apply for a UK biometric identity card*.

Jesus christ get me out of here.
