@ wh00ps - Thank you so much! I will certainly keep blogging, even if it stops being legal. I've only just started, so I'm not giving up yet!

@ loki - If it were just a matter of disregarding the rules myself, I'd do it! But I doubt I could convince the school, whose collusion would be necessary, to risk the penalties, too. Having the option of returning to the US has never been something I've valued lightly. I guess what bothers me is that it's not a matter of choice now.

@ RP - Thanks, dear. It is a wider problem than just for me, which is one of the reasons I can't get too personally enraged about it. There will be people in my situation who have far less savoury places to go back to than the US.

@ Dennis - Yes, all true. I have no problem with the way the head has handled things; her thoughtfulness and regret has been clear throughout. As for marrying my flatmate: I certainly can't do that now you've blabbed it all over the interwebs! The immigration Stasi would catch me in an instant.

@ Dave B - Thanks for the sympathy! And you're right, the 'bit of paper' has very little bearing on one's ability to teach - unless, as some people would argue, it actually demonstrates that one has wasted a year learning fuck-all...

@ John A - Whilst it is true that dual citizenship is now possible, the barriers to obtaining British citizenship are even greater, at least for me, than getting a work-permit. Unfortunately.

I'm so sorry to hear of your predicament, as was said above the soundbite method of governing often overlooks not only the serious impracticalities but also the real human costs. hopefully one of the ideas mentioned above will work but if the worst happens, please keep on blogging for as long as it's legal in your homeland. your posts have been a joy to read and i only wish i'd discovered you sooner.

Hi, I found this blog via comments on The Devil's Kitchen.

You evidently are a type of libertarian who does everything by the rules. That's alright as far as it goes: it means that you're honourable and earnest. You sound like a total sweetie.

But to disregard rules unilaterally imposed upon you by a gang of parasites is no dishonour.

I'd change places with you if I could - i.e., having the option of bungeeing back to the US. It is a vast and wonderfully varied place and I regret not having been able to give it more than a cursory exploration.

I am sorry, this really sucks.

I make reference back to my comment of the other day, a quantitative metric is the worst possible way of assessing the quality and suitability of teachers.

The wider political context of your situation has unsavoury implications for every single one of us. Even if a significant section of society is currently mollified by GB's totalitarian soundbites, rather than incensed.

Do you work at an American school, like TASIS? There are plenty of others, especially in London and surrounding areas. Such schools overwhelmingly employ American teachers. If you have U.S. credits this might be an answer.

Your head has been kind in giving you such long notice of his intentions; March is the key month for finding another teaching job.

As for British citizenship, that takes time to achieve, and quite a bit of money. It is best approached under the aegis of an employer.

If all else fails, you could always marry your flatmate. Since you have apparently been cohabiting, it's most unlikely the immigration Stasi could pick holes in your case.

Of course, a divorce usually ends such marriages, but you never know, this might be the Great Magnet working in his typically subtle and roundabout way. You have sausage sandwiches in common, I know that much!
